Box Score Alex B. Berman posted her first career hat-trick and Catie Merrick became Denison's all-time leading goal scorer as the Big Red improved to 11-1 following a 7-0 shutout of Earlham College from Piper Stadium.
In last Friday's 5-0 victory over the Quakers, Denison outshot Earlham 19-0. Today DU piled up 29 shot attempts while holding the Quakers to zero shot attempts for the second time.
In the first half Molly Chapman broke a scoreless tie when she sent a rocket from the left side into the right corner of the cage. Berman would follow with the next three goals, two of which would come in the first half. The first was scored after Hilary Zdanowski was there to flick the ball to Berman after a shot attempt by Taylor Bacon was turned away.
Her second goal was unassisted and scored after she flipped the ball into the cage from the left end line. In the 42nd minute of play Merrick would knife down the middle of the field where she would thread a pass to Berman to convert the fast break attempt.
Denison's final three goals would come from Tonie Michaels in the 48th minute, Kerianne Sullivan via a penalty corner in the 51st minute and the record-breaker from Merrick would come in the 64th minute when the junior dribbled through traffic on a penalty corner attempt.
In just 46 career games, Merrick has scored 45 career goals, passing former school record holders, Jenny Lacey '05 and Wizzie Crocker '94.
Earlham goalie Emma Treece finished with eight saves. The Big Red out-cornered the Quakers 14-2 as the DU defense racked up its eighth shutout of the season. Denison has outscored its opponents 41-7.
The red-hot Big Red returns to action on Tuesday (Oct. 11) for a pivotal conference match-up with Wittenberg in Springfield, Ohio. Denison topped the Tigers 1-0 in Granville to open the season back on Sept. 3.
