Belton fuels Wabash's win over Denison

Box Score

Wabash quarterback Chase Belton threw for 210 yards, ran for 137 more and totaled four touchdowns as the 11th-ranked Little Giants handed the Denison football team a 39-13 setback in Crawfordsville, Ind. on Saturday afternoon.

On their second drive of the game, Wabash only needed four plays and 1:37 to cover 74 yards for the first touchdown of the game.  The scoring drive was capped off by a 33-yard run by Belton.  After a failed extra point attempt, the Little Giants led 6-0.

On the ensuing possession, Denison engineered a 14 play, 71-yard drive that spanned 7:03 and resulted in a game-tying score.  The Big Red converted all four third downs on the drive, including an 11-yard run by Sam Fioroni and a 21-yard completion to Braden Layer from Max Paulus on third-and-7 plays.  Denison completed the scoring drive when Fioroni punched it in from three yards out on third-and-2.

However, the Little Giants blocked the PAT attempt and ran it back 98 yards to maintain an 8-6 advantage.  Wabash entered the half with an 11-6 edge after an Ian MacDougall 28-yard field goal with 52 seconds left in the period.

The Little Giant offense exploded for three scores in the third quarter to take a commanding 32-6 lead.  Belton opened the third-quarter scoring with a 19-yard strike to Wes Chamblee with 9:29 on the clock.  Belton capped off Wabash's next drive with a 42-yard touchdown run, and threw a 10-yard score to James Kraus with 14 seconds left in the third.  DU got a late score when a 12-play, 44-yard drive was capped off with a two-yard run by Colin Morris.

Paulus finished the game with 154 yards through the air on 21-of-33 passing, while Fioroni totaled 49 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.  Senior wide receiver Andy Carpenter caught five passes for a team-high 53 yards.

Defensively, Scott Baird notched a team-best seven tackles, including five solo stops.  Nat Kell and Charlie Baker each recorded two tackles for loss, while Joel Elliott and Tyler Moseley had one fumble recovery apiece.

In addition to Belton's offensive output, Chamblee finished with three catches for 109 and a score.  Cody Buresh logged a game-high 13 tackles, including one sack and two tackles for loss.

Denison falls to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the NCAC, while Wabash improves to 7-0 and 4-0 in league play.  The Big Red returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 29) when they host Oberlin College at 2 p.m.
