No. 23 W&L stymies Big Red

Box Score

No. 23 Washington & Lee scored twice and managed to keep the Big Red women off the scoreboard in what was a 2-0 final from Lexington, Va.

Denison made the six hour drive to Washington & Lee for the fifth all-time meeting between the two schools and the first match-up since 2007.  The Generals came away with their first win over Denison by scoring the game-winning goal in the 30th minute when Katherine Rush's cross deflected off the body of Katie Rossi for the match's first score.

Scoring opportunities were scarce in the first half as W&L outshot Denison, 3-2.  The Big Red put one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes when Lydia Harlan forced General goalkeeper Emily Leary to make a save in the 25th minute.

In the second half Washington & Lee outshot DU 8-3 while adding an insurance goal in the 70th minute when Ainsley Daigle drilled a free kick to the upper left corner of the goal.

Denison was led in shot attempts by Harlan who finished with three.  Maddy Regan and Claire Hamilton also placed shots on-goal.  Leary posted three saves for W&L en route to becoming the program's all-time leader in shutouts.

Andrea Karl stopped two shots in her 90 minutes of action.  The Big Red returns to North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Wittenberg for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
