Box Score Two impressive winning streaks were on the line Saturday morning in Greencastle, Ind. It would take overtime, but North Coast Athletic Conference newcomer, DePauw University, managed to hand Denison their first blemish of the season by a final score of 3-2.
The loss snaps DU's winning streak at nine games and DePauw ran their winning streak to eight in a row.
The Tigers got off to a fast start when Bridgette Shamleffer recorded a pair of first half goals, giving DePauw a 2-0 lead heading into the season half. Three minutes into the second period, Hilary Zdanwoski received a pass from Molly Chapman and converted the goal, cutting the DePauw lead in half.
Time continued to tick off the clock in the second half and with under one minute to play, sophomore Katie McMahon preserved her team's winning streak for the time being with her eighth goal of the season.
That would force overtime and DePauw's Margaret Ellis got to work fast, scoring the game-winning goal just 2:10 into the extra period.
DePauw held a 21-4 advantage in shots and a 13-4 advantage in penalty corners. Big Red goalie Brttany Benson turned in nine saves and Karla Dixon added one defensive save.
Tiger goalie Maggie Steele finished with two saves and Ellis led the way with six shots.
DU falls to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the NCAC while DePauw moves to 8-1 overall and 7-0 in conference play. Denison returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 5) when they travel to The College of Wooster for a 4:30 p.m. start.
