Box Score Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the second half as the No. 17 Denison Big Red pulled away from the visiting Allegheny Gators for a 79-59 victory from Livingston Gymnasium. The win preserves Denison's record winning streak and moves them to 18-0 overall and 7-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
The Gators got off to a slow start offensivley, missing their first 11 shots from the field as DU held them without a field goal until the 11:12 mark of the first half. Denison held a 15-6 lead at that point and Allegheny would slowly chip away, cutting the Big Red lead to 33-27 at halftime.
Early in the second half Allegheny would put together an 11-3 run to open the half and with 15:06 to play the Gators found themselves leading the Big Red 38-36. That lead would be short lived as Denison's Kyli Parker (Batavia, Ohio/Summit Country Day) drilled a 3-pointer on Denison's next trip down the floor.
A critical sequence in Denison's comeback attempt would happen over a span of 20 seconds midway through the second half. Leading by one at 41-40, Kaiser intercepted a Britni Mohney pass and went coast-to-coast for the layup. On the next Allegheny possession Kaiser perfectly mimicked her previous play, converting another steal and lay-up to lift her team to a five-point lead.
From that point DU started to heat up and with 5:16 to play after a Christina Myers (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) bucket the Big Red had their largest lead of the game at 63-48. Over the final 10 minutes of the contest the home team oustscored the Gators 28-17 to lock up the victory.
Denison shot 56 percent from the field in the second half and outrebounded Allegheny 42-34 for the game. Kaiser finished with 21 points off an 8-for-15 shooting performance. Myers added 13 points and Serafina Nuzzo (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) tallied 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in 31 minutes.
Allegheny was led by Heidi Goeller's 20 points and 8 rebounds. Jill Gregory chipped in 18 points for the Gators who fall to 10-7 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
Denison (18-0, 7-0 NCAC) will return to action next Saturday (Jan. 29) when they travel to Hiram College for a 2 p.m. tip-off against the Terriers.
