No. 17 Big Red tame Tigers for 17th straight win

Box Score

Christina Myers (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) and Nicole Coggins (Mesa, Ariz./Corona del Sol) each scored 11 points as the No. 17 Big Red overcame a season-high 25 turnovers to defeat the Wittenberg Tigers, 60-49 from Pam Evans Smith Arena in Springfield, Ohio.

Denison held Wittenberg to just 23 points in the first half while limiting the Tigers to an 8-for-22 shooting performance in the opening 20 minutes.  The Big Red went into the locker room with a 32-23 advantage thanks to eight first half points from Myers.  It was an excellent start to the contest for DU which haunted the home team into the second half.  Denison jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the first six minutes and that lead would balloon to 25-7 at the midway point of the first half.

Over the next 10 minutes the Tigers continued to chip away and they managed to go on a 10-1 run over the final five minutes of the period to get within striking distance of the Big Red.

In the second half, Wittenberg's momentum carried over and with 13:17 remaining in the game, the Tigers' Ashanta Robinson converted a layup to make it a one possession game, at 38-35.

Despite following with turnovers on their next two possessions, Denison point guard Serafina Nuzzo (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) canned a jumper in the lane to push the lead back to five.  That basket would spark a 10-1 run by Denison over the next five minutes that would nudge their lead back to double-digits and eventually result in the team's 17th consecutive victory.

The win breaks the school record for consecutive wins set in 2008-09 when DU rattled off 16-straight conference victories.  In the most recent Division III national polls which were released on Tuesday, DU held at 17th in the WBCA/USA Today Coaches Poll and moved up to 19th in the D3hoops.com Top-25.

Following Coggins and Myers' 11-point performances was senior Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) who scored nine points along with nine rebounds and three steals.  Nuzzo and Kyli Parker (Batavia, Ohio/Summit Country Day) each finished with eight points.

Wittenberg was led by Kim Replogle and Sarah Watson who each scored 12 points.  Katherine Hueter posted eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Tigers shot 34 percent from the field and were 0-for-11 from 3-point range while Denison connected on 49 percent of their field goals.  Wittenberg held a 35-34 edge on the boards and the Tigers committed 23 turnovers that turned into 23 points for the Big Red.

Denison (17-0, 6-0 NCAC) will host Allegheny College on Saturday at 1 p.m.  A live video stream of Saturday's men's and women's basketball doubleheader against the Gators will be provided by the Denison Sports Network.
