Earlham's big second half sinks Big Red

Box Score

Karman Duchon scored five goals, with four coming in the second half as the Earlham College Quakers posted a 6-4 victory over the Denison Big Red from Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville.

Denison and Earlham battled through the first 45 minutes to a 1-1 tie but in the second half the speed of Earlham's dangerous offensive tandem of Duchon and Joy Doucette accounted for all five of the Quaker goals.

Trailing 2-1 in the 54th minute, Denison's Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./The Baylor School) received a ball off a corner kick attempt by Jenn Sloan (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends) and sent a beautiful cross to the head of Tory Danis (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) who drove the ball past Earlham goalkeeper Megan Holthaus for her second goal of the contest.  The score would remain 2-2 until the 63rd minute when Duchon sent a shot directly at Big Red keeper Kerrigan Dopp (McLean, Va./McLean School) who was there for the save.  After the ball bounced off the hands of Dopp, it landed directly in front of Duchon who finished with her second goal of the day.

Faced with another comeback attempt, just over one minute after Duchon gave Earlham a 3-2 lead, Clemmer struck back with a goal from just inside the 18-yard box.

Just five minutes later Duchon would score the first of what would be three consecutive goals giving Earlham a 6-3 lead with 13 minutes to play.  Denison's Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) would convert a Danis through ball, trimming the Earlham lead to two goals with five minutes left. Over the final three minutes the Big Red had two more scoring opportunities but failed to convert, resulting in the 6-4 loss.

Denison outshot Earlham 21-14 but the difference in the game was the play of Duchon who finished with eight shots and a career-high five goals.  Holthaus recorded five saves for the Quakers while Dopp finished with two saves for the Big Red.

Denison (2-1-1) will look to rebound on Saturday when they travel to William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y. for an 11 a.m. kickoff.
