Box Score The Denison field hockey team picked up their second NCAC win of the season with a nail-biting 1-0 overtime victory over rival Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Granville.
After the two teams battled through nearly 70 minutes of scoreless action, first-year Katie McMahon (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) intercepted a pass and carried the ball down the middle of the field, where she would find sophomore Hilary Zdanowski (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) on the left side approaching the net. Zdanowski then fired a shot from 10 yards out that was saved by Battling Bishops goalkeeper Abbie Martin. However, Martin was unable to clear the ball away and the rebound was corralled by McMahon, who rifled a shot into the goal at the 6:39 mark in the first overtime period to give the Big Red the win. For McMahon, the goal was the first of her collegiate career.
Although Ohio Wesleyan outshot the Big Red 13-10 for the game, the Battling Bishops offensive attack was held scoreless by a stifling Denison defense and sophomore goalie Brittany Benson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), who made five saves on the afternoon and notched her second shutout of the season.
The Big Red's best scoring opportunity in regulation was with 4:34 remaining in the second half when McMahon was awarded a penalty stroke after an OWU foul. McMahon put a good strike on the ball but the keeper Martin made a tremendous save to her right to keep the score knotted at a scoreless tie.
Denison controlled the ball for the majority of the overtime period and out-shot the Battling Bishops 4-2 during that time frame.
With the win, DU improves to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in NCAC competition, while Ohio Wesleyan falls to 4-3 (3-2 NCAC). The Big Red return to the field next Saturday (Oct. 2) at home against Kenyon. Game-time from Deeds Field in Granville is slated for 10 a.m.
