No. 18 DU snaps skid with win over Gettysburg

Box Score

The 18th-ranked Denison women's soccer team scored two early goals and had their defense turn out a solid performance as the Big Red snapped a two-game slide in a 2-0 victory over Gettysburg College on Sunday afternoon from Geneva, N.Y.

Denison took the lead at the 13:50 mark when senior Jen Clemmer's (Hixson, Tenn./The Baylor School) shot from the top of the 18-yard box found its way past Bullet goalie Allie Rivera.  The score was Clemmer's third of the season and third in as many games.

Less than two minutes later, junior Tory Danis (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) found the back of the net for her third tally of the 2010 season.  Danis' insurance goal came at 15:42.

With a two-goal edge, the Denison defense turned in a solid outing as they surrendered just eight more shots over the next 75 minutes of play, with only one finding its way to first-year goalkeeper Andrea Karl (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty).

Denison outshot Gettysburg 17-9, including a 9-1 advantage in shots on net.  In their last game, the Big Red failed to garner a corner kick attempt for the first time since 2001.  However, DU was able to engineer four corner kicks while keeping the Bullets away from the corner flags.  Karl made one stop as she notched her second-career shutout, while Rivera made seven saves in the loss.

Denison improves to 3-2-1 on the season, while Gettysburg falls to 3-2 overall.  The Big Red returns to the field on Wednesday (Sept. 15) when they host nationally-ranked and undefeated Otterbein University.  Kick off from Barclay-Thomsen Field is slated for 7:30 p.m.
