Box Score The sixth-ranked Herons of William Smith College scored a pair of goals in each half en route to a 4-1 victory over the Denison University women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in Geneva, N.Y.
William Smith opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Whitney Frary scored on a penalty kick after a DU foul in the box. Just three minutes later, Big Red senior Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./The Baylor School) uncorked a shot from 30 yards out past Heron goalie Amanda Davis and into the back of the net. Clemmer's second tally of the season came on DU's first shot of the match and tied the game at the 13:18 mark. However, Brelynn Nasypany found Renee Jensen in the 19th minute for William Smith's second goal of the game as the home team entered the intermission up 2-1.
The Big Red held a 6-4 edge in shots over the first 30 minutes minutes of the second half, including a penalty kick attempt at the 48:49 mark. However, a save by Davis kept the Herons ahead on the scoreboard early in the frame. William Smith was able to expand their lead with goals from Nasypany and Chelsea England in the 83rd and 84th minutes, respectively, to secure their fourth-consecutive win of 2010.
Clemmer led DU with seven shots, while Angie Coderre (Flossmor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) had two, and Alicia Blake (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) and Kimmi Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) each registered a shot. Denison goalie Andrea Karl (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) stopped five shots, and Davis finished with six saves.
Denison falls to 2-2-1, while the Herons improve to 4-0. The Big Red returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 12) when they take on Gettysburg in Geneva, N.Y. Match time is slated for 11 a.m.
