The Big Red outscored Wittenberg 8-1 over the final 16 minutes of play to complete a come-from-behind, 14-10 victory over the Tigers from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium on Thursday night in Granville, Ohio.
Wittenberg led by as many as three goals with 16 minutes to play but Denison's Alex Thurner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) got DU going with her first goal of the game on a second-chance opportunity for the Big Red. Denison's Phoebe Myhrum (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) won the ensuing draw and just as she did earlier in the half, Myhrum took the draw right down the middle of the field, scoring her third goal of the game and her second transition goal of the contest.
With 13:13 to play, Denison tied the contest 9-9 when Thurner connected on an eight-meter attempt after a foul by Wittenberg's Katie Frey. Just over two minutes later DU took their first lead since the score was 2-1 in the first half when Jenny Strathern (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) converted a free-position shot by beating Wittenberg goalie Bonnie Kenney low and to the right.
DU would go on to add some insurance thanks to a goal by Molly Cornbrooks (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) and two goals by Lulu Carter (Greenwich, Conn./The Millbrook School) in the closing minutes. Denison was led in scoring by Myhrum who finished with three goals and one assist. Carter also scored three goals while Thurner and Sara Langsam (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) each scored two.
Wittenberg was led by Erin Guiliano's three goals and one assist. Jessica Mead and Linsdey Hanners scored a pair of goals for the Tigers. The Big Red outshot Wittenberg 31-20 while forcing the Tigers into 19 turnovers. Senior Bethany Keller (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) led the defense with two caused turnovers and two ground balls. First-year goalie Hannah Minifie (Dalton, Mass./Miss Hall's School) posted six saves while Kenney made 11 stops for Wittenberg.
Denison improves to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with the victory. Wittenberg drops to 7-3 and 1-1 in the NCAC. Denison will continue their conference schedule on Saturday (April 10) when they travel to Delaware, Ohio for an 12 p.m. match-up with Ohio Wesleyan.
