The College of Wooster went on a 5-0 run to open the second half of play and held off a late Denison charge to pull off a 10-9 victory over the visiting Big Red on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 10-6 after Claire Nelson-Johnson's free position goal with 15:27 to play in the second half, Denison began to charge back when Megan Lafferty (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) scored an unassisted goal with 13:16 to play. Alyssa Zinnser (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) would connect on a free-position goal with 6:17 to play and Molly Sprega (Portland, Maine/Deering) got DU to within one when Sara Langsam (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) found her in front of the net for her first goal of the day.
Over the final three minutes of play the Big Red would have two more chances to tie the game. With just under three minutes to play Denison's shot attempt was turned away by Wooster goalie Shawna Ferris. With 30 seconds left, Denison had regained possession and was threatening to score before a turnover sealed the win for the Fighting Scots.
All nine of Denison's goals were scored by nine different players. Langsam and Lulu Carter (Greenwich, Conn./The Millbrook School) led the team in points with one goal and one assist.
Big Red goalie Hannah Minifie (Dalton, Mass./Miss Hall's School) posted nine saves in 60 minutes. Ferris ended with 11 saves for Wooster.
The Scots improve to 4-2 and 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Denison falls to 4-3 and 0-1 in conference play.
