Denison falls to Allegheny in double overtime

Allegheny's Abby Silvester scored the game winning goal 1:13 into the second overtime to clinch a thrilling 11-10 victory for the Gators over the Denison Big Red from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium in Granville.

In a game that saw seven lead changes it was Allegheny who came up big down the stretch.  Trailing by one goal with under a minute to play in both regulation and the first overtime, the Gators came up with clutch goals in both pressure-packed situations.  In regulation DU was clinging to a 9-8 lead when Silvester sent the game into overtime when she went low and to the left on Denison goalie Hannah Minifie (Dalton, Mass./Miss Hall's School), sending the game into overtime.

The Big Red would score first in overtime when Emily Berges (Branford, Conn./Branford) scored off an assist from Phoebe Myhrum (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy).  Denison had possession with just over a minute to play but a shot by Myhrum and a save by Allegheny's Rebecca O'Shurak would give the Gators an opportunity to tie the game.  After a successful clear, Allegheny's Christina Zanic drove to the goal and sent a shot of the post that rebounded into the crosse of Jensen Paterson who followed with a game-tying goal with 28 seconds left.

In the second overtime, which was "sudden victory", Denison senior defender Jackie Pachuta (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) snagged her team-high fifth draw of the game to open play and quickly on the fast-break, Pachuta tried to find Myhrum who attempted a catch-and-shoot attempt against a Gator defense that was on its heels. While trying to shoot, the ball was mishandled and Allegheny's Noelle Brouillard scooped up the ground ball that would lead to the game-winner from Silvester.

Silvester led all scorers with five goals.  Denison was paced by Myhrum, Molly Cornbrooks (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country Day) and Carly Tschantz (Omaha, Neb./New Trier) who each had two goals.  Alex Thurner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) scored one goal and had two assists.

Allegheny edged Denison in shots 30-29 and Denison held a narrow 13-11 lead in draw control situations.  O'Shurak posted 11 saves for Allegheny while Minifie netted eight saves for the Big Red.

Denison falls to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Allegheny improves to 6-7 and 3-2 in league play.  Denison will close out their regular season on Tuesday when they travel to Kenyon College for a 4:30 p.m. draw.
