Ohio Wesleyan outscored Denison 5-2 in the first half and turned that into a 9-7 victory over the Big Red from Roy Rike Field in Delaware, Ohio on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops DU to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Ohio Wesleyan moves to 1-3 in conference play and 7-4 overall.
The game was scoreless for the first nine minutes of play until Ohio Wesleyan's Addie Bishop broke the 0-0 tie with an unassisted goal. That goal would spawn a 5-0 Ohio Wesleyan run that would last until the final minute of the first half when DU scored back-to-back goals off shots by Molly Sbrega (Portland, Maine/Deering) and Lulu Carter (Greenwich, Conn./The Millbrook School).
Denison's momentum carried over into the second half where they opened the period with two more goals from Carly Tschantz (Omaha, Neb./New Trier) and Phoebe Myhrum (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) cut OWU's lead to one at 5-4. With 15:17 to play in the game, Annie Swanson scored off an assist by Meredith Wholley upping the Bishop lead to two. The two teams would each score three goals over the final 11 minutes of action to set the final at 9-7 in favor of the Battling Bishops.
Denison was led in scoring by Myhrum who scored two goals and had one assist. Tschantz posted two goals, six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Both of Tschantz's goals came via eight-meter attempts.
Denison goalie Hannah Minifie (Dalton, Mass./Miss Hall's School) played well for DU, stopping eight shots on the day. Ohio Wesleyan goalie Lauren Figy posted 11 saves for her squad.
Denison committed 26 turnovers compared to 24 for OWU and won 11 of 17 draw controls. The Big Red will try and rebound on Tuesday (April 13) when they host Oberlin College at 7 p.m.
