Junior wing Haley Dahlgard (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) dropped a career-high 28 points to lead the Denison women's basketball team to a 86-52 victory over Oberlin College in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday night from Livingston Gymnasium in Granville.
The opening 10 minutes of the first half was a back-and-forth battle between the two NCAC opponents. With the scored tied at 14-14, the Big Red engineered a 12-1 run which gave the home squad a 26-15 advantage with 6:39 left in the opening frame. DU's 37-23 halftime lead ended in the 34-point victory as Denison enjoyed a double-digit advantage for the entire second half.
Dahlgard shot 10-of-14 from the field and an impressive 6-of-7 from three-point land, which tied the school record for most threes made in a game. The junior also grabbed six rebounds, dished out two assists and blocked two shots. Classmate Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) notched her second-career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, while rookie point guard Serafina Nuzzo (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) chipped in 13 tallies, six boards and three steals. First-year Kristen Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) also logged three steals and handed out a career-high seven helpers to go with her eight points.
Oberlin was paced by Syrea Thomas' 17 points and nine rebounds, while Allison Anderson dished out seven assists.
Denison shot 48 percent from the field, while the Yeowomen converted 35 percent of their shots from the floor. DU held a 54-29 advantage on the glass and outscored OC in the paint 44-22. The Big Red also scored 30 second chance points compared to Oberlin's five, and turned 12 Yeowomen turnovers into 14 tallies.
Denison improves to 17-7 overall and 9-6 in the NCAC, while Oberlin falls to 5-19 on the year and 4-11 in the league. The Big Red returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 20) when they face Hiram College. Tip-off from Granville is scheduled for 2 p.m.
