Myers' double-double leads DU past Allegheny

Christina Myers (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) logged her first-career double-double to lead the Denison Big Red to a 63-54 victory over Allegheny College in a key North Coast Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon from the David V. Wise Center in Meadville, Pa.

The two squads battled throughout the majority of the opening frame.  With the contest tied at 16-all, Denison outscored the Gators 11-4 over the final 6:51 to enter the half up 27-20.

In the second period, the Big Red was able to enjoy a 10-point lead (30-20) after opening the half with three free throws by Myers.  However, Allegheny clawed back and, with 12:01 left in the half, tied the contest at 39-39 on a three-pointer by Ann Ryan.

Over the next 4:39, two evenly matched teams were involved a see-saw battle that featured two ties and three lead changes.  Sophomore Jessica Gryzbowski (Parma, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) broke the 45-45 tie with a triple.  The Gators' Brittney Bell was able to trim the lead to 48-47 at the 6:25 mark, but that was as close as the home team would get.  A Myers layup sparked a run that put DU up by 11 with 11 ticks left before taking home the nine-point victory.

Myers finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in 33 minutes of play, while junior Haley Dahlgard (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) chipped in 11 tallies and eight boards.  First-year point guard Serafina Nuzzo (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) added 10 points, four assists and four steals.

Jill Gregory led all scorers with 17 points, while Bell finished with 11 points and Shannon Culbreath grabbed a game-high 11 boards.

The Big Red improves to 16-7 on the season and 8-6 in the NCAC, while the Gators fall to 9-14 overall and 6-8 in the league.  Denison returns to action on Wednesday when they host the Yeowomen of Oberlin College.  Tip-off from Livingston Gymnasium is slated for 7:30 p.m.
