Box Score Wittenberg's Boo Vernon broke a 2-2 tie with just over five minutes to play in the final overtime to lead the top-seeded Tigers past the No. 4 seeded Denison Big Red in the semifinals of the 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
Vernon's goal came in the 95th minute when she sent a shot at Denison second-year goalie Brittany Benson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) who recorded the save. The rebound off that shot was controlled by Vernon who was there for the game-winning put back. The goal was Vernon's 25th of the season and her second of the game. Prior to that goal by Vernon the two squads had played the previous 43 minutes without a goal.
Trailing 1-0 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half, Denison tied the score when Catie Merrick (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest) secured a loose ball and knocked it past Wittenberg goalie Jenny Schaafsma. The two teams went into halftime tied at 1-1 and the Big Red gained a 2-1 lead in the 47th minute when Alex Berman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) scored her third goal of the season.
That lead would last just five minutes when Tori Casanta scored off an assist by Meredith Price at the 51:31. That goal would spark the 43-minute drought that would end just before the match would have been decided by a stroke-off.
Wittenberg held a 34-15 advantage in the shot department and Benson posted 17 saves in the cage for the Big Red. Katherine Ireland (Evanston, Ill./Loyola Academy) and Karla Dixon (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) both added defensive saves for DU.
The loss ends Denison's season with an 8-11 record. Wittenberg advances to the NCAC Championship on Saturday versus Wooster.
