Box Score The Denison University women's basketball team had four players score in double figures en route to a 91-44 victory over Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday afternoon in Granville. With the win, the Big Red improve to a perfect 5-0 on the year, while the Tartans fall to 1-4.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Jennifer Larsen gave Carnegie Mellon their largest lead of the afternoon at 8-4. However, DU answered with a 14-0 run spanning almost four minutes to build up a 10-point lead. Denison went 5-for-7 from the floor during the run, while the Tartans went 0-for-9 after connecting on their first three shots of the game.
At the 7:49 mark, senior Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) moved into seventh place on DU's all-time scoring list after hitting the first of her two free throws. The Big Red continued to build on their lead as they took a 26-point advantage into the locker room (48-22). Senior Haley Dahlgard (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) was 5-of-6 from the field in the opening period, including a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc.
The home team continued to fire on all cylinders in the second period as they shot a blistering 68 percent from the floor (17-of-25) and outrebounded Carnegie Mellon 20-8. Dahlgard shot 80 percent from the floor in 19 minutes off the bench. The senior knocked down 8-of-10 shots, with 4-of-5 coming from three-point range. Kaiser logged her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 boards, while sophomore point guard Serafina Nuzzo (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) chipped in 14 tallies and nine assists and junior Christina Myers (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) added 10 points and seven boards.
Denison finished the day 35-for-60 (58 percent) from the field. The Big Red held a 46-30 advantage on the glass, and converted 17 Tartan turnovers into 19 points. The DU bench also outscored the Carnegie reserves 42-21.
The Big Red is off to their first 5-0 start since the 1974-75 season. Denison looks to improve to 6-0 for first time in program history on Sunday (Nov. 28) when they host Chatham at 2 p.m.
