Box Score Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) scored 22 points and Serafina Nuzzo (Western Springs, Ill./Bishop Fenwick) added 19 points as the Denison Big Red moved to 2-0 on the year with an 84-62 victory over Bethany College on the first day of the Washington & Jefferson Tip-Off Classic.
Denison held an 11-point lead after the first half of play and in the second half the Big Red offense was clicking on all cylinders. Over the final 20 minutes of play the Big Red outscored Bethany 47-36 and shot a blistering 66 percent from the field. Kaiser scored 11 of her game-high 22 points in the second half and moved into eighth place on the Denison career scoring list with 1,044 career points.
Kaiser was 9-of-12 from the field and led the team in rebounds with eight. Nuzzo followed Kaiser with 19 points off a an 8-of-13 shooting performance. The second-year starter also dished out four assists and three steals. Joining Kaiser and Nuzzo in double figures was junior post Christina Myers (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) who scored 12 points to go along with four blocked shots.
Eighteen players saw action for the Big Red and 11 different players got in the scoring column. The Denison defense capitalized on 20 Bethany turnovers that they managed to turn into 21 points. Conversely, DU committed just seven turnovers.
Denison will close out play at the W&J Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon when they face the host, Presidents at 4 p.m.
