Denison blanks Oberlin in regular season finale

Box Score

Less than 48 hours removed from securing a berth in the 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, the Denison field hockey team closed out the 2010 regular season with a 7-0 victory over the Oberlin College Yeowomen on Saturday afternoon from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.

The Big Red wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as they took the early lead when sophomore Catie Merrick (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest) scored her 20th goal of the season off an assist from first-year Katie McMahon (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) at 4:47.

In the 10th minute, McMahon got in on the action as she took a cross from fellow rookie Taylor Bacon (Mission Hills, Kan./Pembroke Hill School) and fired the ball past keeper Kiran Puri.  At the 28:50 mark, Bacon notched her second goal of the season when she flipped a shot over the down goalie and into the upper left corner of the goal.  Bacon's unassisted tally gave DU a 3-0 advantage at the intermission.

In the early stages of the second half, McMahon notched her second goal of the day and eight of the season.  The first-year attacker dribbled the ball from the right sideline towards the cage and fired a one-time shot between the goalie's legs.

Sophomore Liz Arnold (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) notched her first collegiate goal at 50:44, while junior Caroline Kasper (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine's) found Tonie Michaels (Dousman, Wis./University Lake School) for DU's six goal of the day just 18 seconds later.  Kasper sent a short cross to Michaels who went five hole on Puri for her second tally of the year.  The Big Red's final score came in the 64th minute when rookie Alex Berman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) broke away from the Oberlin defense, deked past the charging keeper and shot into a wide open net.

Denison outshot Oberlin 30-7, including a 22-1 edge in shots on goal.  Puri finished the day with 14 saves, while sophomore Brittany Benson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and first-year Laura Campbell (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) combined for the shutout.

The Big Red improve to 8-10 overall and 6-6 in the NCAC.  DU returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Springfield, Ohio for a 3 p.m. NCAC Semifinal against No. 1 seed, Wittenberg at 3 p.m.
