Box Score Excellent goalkeeping by both Denison and Wooster kept the scoring down but an early offensive charge by the visiting Fighting Scots would be enough to send them past the Big Red, 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
The Scots came out on fire with five shots in the opening seven minutes of play. In the eighth minute, Wooster's Eileen Barrer gathered a loose ball following a penalty corner attempt and sent the ball into the Denison cage, giving her squad a 1-0 lead.
Denison came right back when freshman Katie McMahon (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) played the ball from the right side of the field into the center of the field, just in front of the cage, where Catie Merrick (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest) blasted home her 18th goal of the season, tying the score at 1-1 just 9:12 into the first half.
After the Denison score, Wooster would go back on the offensive with four shots that would all result in saves by DU goalkeeper Brittany Benson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier). In the 23rd minute it appeared as if Denison took the lead but the goal was waived off by the official. Wooster capitalized on the change in momentum when Barrer got out on a fastbreak and fed a nice pass to Amanda Artman who one-timed the shot into the lower left corner of the cage.
Despite 11 more shots from the Big Red and 14 shots from Wooster the score would hold at 2-1 in favor of the Scots over the next 47 minutes of play. Benson finished with 12 saves. Wooster netminder Liz Pumley posted seven saves in her 70 minutes of action.
Wooster outshot DU 24-13 and held a 13-6 advantage in penalty corners. The Big Red were led in the shot department by Merrick who took four. Artman paced Wooster with six shots.
Denison falls to 6-10 overall and 4-6 in the conference while Wooster moves to 10-5 and 7-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Big Red will take the next week off before returning to action next Thursday (Oct. 28) with a road contest at Ohio Wesleyan.
