Denison holds off DePauw for sixth victory of 2010

Box Score

Catie Merrick (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest) scored twice and the Big Red defense continued their stellar play as Denison held off DePauw for a 2-1 victory from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.  The victory improves Denison's record to 6-9 while DePauw tastes defeat for just the third time in 2010.

The Big Red got on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute of play when Caroline Kasper (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine's) sent a penalty corner pass into into play.  The ball was secured by Katie McMahon (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) who weaved past a Tiger defender before firing a shot that was re-directed into the cage by Merrick for her 16th goal of the season.  DU would go on to outshoot DePauw 6-2 in the first half of play and the two squads entered the second half with the Big Red holding a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes into the second half Merrick would give the Big Red a little breathing room when she controlled a loose ball in front of the cage and buried her shot into the lower right corner of the cage for her 17th goal of the season.

Just two minutes later, DePauw would respond when Margaret Ellis got out in front of the Big Red defense for a breakaway goal.  The goal was her team-best 17th of the season.

DePauw's best chance to tie the match came in the 56th minute of play when Bridgett Shamleffer sent a smash that was saved by the right glove of Denison goalkeeper Brittany Benson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier).  Over the final 10 minutes DePauw would have one penalty corner attempt but zero shots.

Denison outshot DePauw 12-7 and Benson finished the day with three saves in the cage for DU.  DePauw goalie Liz Attewell posted five saves in her 70 minutes of action.

Denison improves to 6-9 overall with the win.  They will return to action on Wednesday (Oct. 20) when they host The College of Wooster at 4:30 p.m.
