After rattling off 10 straight victories which nearly spanned the opening six weeks of the season, the Big Red dropped their third-straight game on Saturday night, falling to Ohio Wesleyan, 62-57 from Branch Rickey Arena in Delaware, Ohio.
This Bishops got a career-high 29 points from freshman Dany Finck and held DU to 34 percent shooting from the field, eventually holding off the Big Red in the closing minutes.
OWU held a four-point lead with just under two minutes to play until Denison freshman Kyli Parker (Batavia, Ohio/Summit Country Day) drilled a 3-pointer with 1:30 left, cutting the Bishop lead to 58-57. On their next possession, OWU's Kayla Gordon scored down low to put OWU up three points with 1:07 to play. Denison would come up short on two potential game-tying 3-pointers before having to foul OWU's Lauren Gentene with three seconds left. Gentene connected on both free throws to ice the victory, 62-57.
The two teams went into the locker room tied, 28-28 and the Big Red opened up a five point lead in the first five minutes of play in the second half. That would spring 16-6 run for the home team over the next eight minutes of play which would put Ohio Wesleyan in the drivers seat down the stretch.
Denison got a double-double from junior Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) who scored 12 points and added 10 rebounds and three assists. Parker came off the bench to score 10 points while Jessica Grzyzbowski (Parma, Ohio/Padua) chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.
Along with Finck's 29-point outburst, OWU got 11 points apiece from Tyler Cordell and Gordon. The Battling Bishops shot 39 percent for the game and were 9 of 13 from the free throw line. Denison was 21 of 61 from the field, but edged their opponents on the glass, 44-42.
The Big Red will try and break out of their week-long funk on Wednesday (Jan. 13) when they travel to Oberlin for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
