Second-half burst sends Wooster past DU

Kym Wenz scored a game-high 32 points as the College of Wooster Fighting Scots knocked off the Denison Big Red 72-59 in North Coast Athletic Conference action from Livingston Gymnasium on Friday night.

After a tightly contested opening half, the Scots came out of the locker room on fire as they carefully orchestrated a 21-5 run that spanned the first half of the second period.  The run that put Wooster up 51-36 saw five different players score and was paced by Wenz's six points and five tallies each by Kristen Schwartz and Kaitlin Krister.  The Fighting Scots ultimately sealed their victory when Wenz drained a triple which gave Wooster a 60-42 advantage with five minutes to play.  The victory snapped a  Wooster's 19-game losing to the Big Red and was the first victory over DU since Dec. 5, 2000.

Denison outrebounded the Scots 52-42 and recorded 19 second chance points, but those numbers couldn't overcome the Big Red's 21-of-72 performance from the field.

Junior Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) led the DU with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Christina Myers (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) added 15 tallies and eight boards and Serafina Nuzzo (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) chipped in 10 points.

Wenz finished the night 9-for-18 from the field and 10-for-12 from the charity stripe.  She also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out three assists and registered three steals.  Schwartz posted 13 tallies, while Krister grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Denison falls to 10-3 overall and 2-2 in the NCAC, while Wooster improves to 4-9 on the year and 1-3 in the league.  The Big Red returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 9) when they travel to NCAC rival Ohio Wesleyan University.  Tip-off in Delaware, Ohio is slated for 7:30 p.m.
