The Denison women's basketball team shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half which led to a 22-point halftime advantage for the Big Red, and ultimately resulted in a 68-46 victory over the College of Wooster on Saturday afternoon from Timken Gymnasium.
Denison broke the game open in the middle portion of the opening half thanks to a 15-0 run that gave the visiting team a 29-7 lead. The run capping three pointer by first-year point guard Serafina Nuzzo (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) put DU up by over 22 points, a cushion they would enjoy for the remainder of the contest.
The Big Red finished the day 27-of-62 (44 percent) while the Fighting Scots struggled from the field converting just 25 percent (15-of-60). Both squads committed 17 turnovers, but Denison was able to turn those 17 giveaways in to 28 points compared to just five points off turnovers for Wooster. The Big Red held a 47-40 edge on the glass and recorded 17 assists.
Junior Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) led all scorers with 19 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Nuzzo finished the afternoon with 15 points, five assists and three rebounds, while rookie post player Lucy Follansbee (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall School) grabbed a career-high eight boards.
Kym Wenz paced the Scots with 14 points, while Taylor Keegan and Kaitlin Kristler each pulled down six rebounds.
DU improves to 15-4 overall and 7-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Wooster falls to 7-12 on the year and 4-6 in league play. Denison returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Springfield, Ohio to take on the conference-leading Tigers of Wittenberg University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
