Winning streak hits 10 as Big Red open 2010

Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) scored 18 points and had five steals as Denison battled back from a first half deficit to defeat Heidelberg 70-59 from Seiberling Gymnasium.  The victory was the 10th consecutive win for the Big Red, who have not lost since the season opener on Nov. 15.

DU held a double-digit lead throughout much of the second half but it didn't come easy early on.  Heidelberg had pushed their lead out to nine points with seven minutes left in the first half.  In those first 13 minutes the Big Red scraped together only 13 points.  Over the final seven minutes of the half DU exploded with a 25-10 run to take a 38-32 lead into the locker room.

First-year point guard Serafina Nuzzo (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) scored nine points in the first half and had seven of her game-high eight assists in the period.  Kaiser and Haley Dahlgard (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) both scored seven points in the half for DU.

In the second half the Big Red's hot shooting that was on display at the end of the first half cooled a bit, but the defense clamped down, holding Heidelberg to just eight field goals and 24 percent shooting in the half.

Kaiser finished the game with 18 points and led her team in scoring for the ninth time this season.  She did most of her damage from the free throw line where she hit on 11 of 13.  She also added four rebounds and five steals in 38 minutes.  Sophomore Jessica Grzybowski (Parma, Ohio/Padua) scored four points and tied her career-high with 10 rebounds.

In addition to holding Heidelberg to 29 percent shooting from the field, the DU defense forced their opponents into 23 turnovers that they turned into 16 points.

The Berg got 20 points and 12 rebounds from Jenny Miller.

Denison's will return to action on Tuesday (Jan. 5) when they host Wittenberg at 7:30 p.m.
