Merrick's big day leads Denison past Roanoke

After scoring two goals and helping her team to a 4-3 victory over Wittenberg in her collegiate debut on Tuesday, Denison's Catie Merrick (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest) netted three goals on Saturday, helping DU to a 4-2 win over Roanoke College in Lynchburg, Va.

Senior Kristen Schneider (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) got the Big Red going in the 16th minute when she handled a pass from Brooke Donovan (Westport, Conn./Staples) for her first goal of the season and the 10th of her career. With just under five minutes before halftime, Donovan would find Merrick in front of the goal giving DU a 2-0 lead.

The Maroons would get on the scoreboard in the 48th minute when Jessica Perkins scored an unassisted goal.  Five minutes later Merrick scored her second goal, this time off an assist by Lauren Keny (Bexley, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls).  With only eight minutes left, Roanoke got within one when Lindsey Bass scored off an assist from Mariah Vietri.

Just over one minute later Vietri would get a shot on goal only to have what would have been a game-tying score, saved by freshman goalie Brittany Benson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier).  That save would lead to Merrick's third goal via a Schneider assist with three minutes to play.

Denison outshot Roanoke 24-14 and took 12 penalty corners compared to seven for the Maroons.  Benson finished with seven saves in the cage while Roanoke's Christina Schicilone posted four saves.

Merrick led DU with eight shots while Donovan added six and first-year Devon Satnick chipped in four.

Denison (2-0) will take on Lynchburg on Sunday (Sept. 6) at 1 p.m.
