Sophomore Clare Meernik (Redford, Mich./Marian) scored in the 79th minute to propel the 20th-ranked Denison University women's soccer team to 1-0 victory over Endicott College on Saturday afternoon at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville.
The DU held an 11-2 advantage in shots, including 4-1 shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes. The Big Red had a golden chance 15 minutes into the second period to break the 0-0 tie when junior Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) had a one-on-one with Gulls' keeper Nicole Lawlor, but an impressive save kept the match scoreless. Denison notched the only tally of the game in at the 78:41 mark when Meernik stepped around the Endicott defender and shot it past the challenging goalie into the lower left corner. Meernik's goal was started by a pass from senior captain Anna Rusch (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends School).
Senior goalkeeper Courtney Cobb (Sylvania, Ohio St./Ursula Academy) made one stop, while Lawlor finished the contest with eight saves.
DU improves to 2-0 on the season, while the Gulls fall to 0-2. The Big Red return to action on Sunday when they host Alma College at 11 a.m.
