Wooster stops Big Red, 27-6

Box Score

Wooster quarterback Austin Holter threw for 229 yards and rushed for a career-high 116 yards, helping the Fighting Scots grind out a 26-7 victory over the Denison Big Red on Saturday from John P. Papp Stadium in Wooster, Ohio.

Playing in a light to moderate rain all afternoon, the Big Red were stalled on their opening two drives of the game.  The Scots managed to get on the scoreboard first, when Jordan McIntyre broke free for a 16-yard touchdown with just over seven minutes to play in the first quarter.

After forcing the Big Red to go three-and-out, Wooster would piece together an 11-play, 47 yard drive that would be capped off by a Russ Palm field goal from 35-yards out.

In the second quarter, on the heels of a Wooster missed field goal try from 42-yards away, Denison embarked on their longest drive of the day after taking over at their own 25-yard line.  Senior Nick Krempasky (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) got the drive going with a 14 yard carry.  A Wooster penalty would push the Big Red into enemy territory for the first time and then a steady dose of Krempasky and freshman Yandy Plasencia (Miami, Fla./Ferguson) would get DU into the red zone.  On third and seven from the 13-yard line, quarterback Braden Layer (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was forced out of the pocket and he gained eight yards for the first down.  Two plays later, Krempasky reached the end zone with a 5-yard run.  The drive lasted 7:29 in all and covered 14 plays.

Shortly after the Denison touchdown, thunder was heard in the area and play was stopped for 30 minutes.  Wooster would manage another field goal as time expired in the second quarter, to head into the intermission with a 13-7 lead.

In the second half the Scots took the field first and proceeded to put together a 13-play drive that would end in a 4th-and-three incompletion by Holter.  The Big Red took over on their own 21-yard line, with momentum and a chance to take the lead.

On their first play, junior Dan Crawford (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) broke off a 14-yard gain.  On the very next play, Wooster senior standout Matt DeGrand forced Crawford to fumble after a 4-yard gain and the Scots recovered on the Denison 41-yard line.

A 27-yard pass from Holter to Logan Dunn combined with a 14-yard run by Holter would give Wooster a little breathing room at 19-7 with 8:43 to play in the third quarter.

That would also be the last strong scoring chance for the Big Red as their next four possessions would result in either a punt of a loss of possession on downs.

DU did win the time of possession 32-28 and Krempasky posted his fourth career 100-yard rushing day with exactly 100 yards off a workmanlike 28 carries.  Crawford added eight carries for 40 yards while Plasencia chipped in 26 yards.  Denison was run-first and run often all game long so the passing game totaled just 37 yards while going just 5-for-13.

Defensively, Denison was led by senior safety Drew Homyk (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) who posted 11 tackles and two pass break-up's.  Freshman Alex Sycher (Columbus, Ohio/New Albany) and senior Bill Aukerman (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) added six tackles apiece.  Wooster was paced by DeGrand's 12 tackles and one forced fumble.

DU falls to 1-2 on the year while Wooster improves to 2-1.  The Big Red will return to Granville next Saturday for a clash with No. 10 Case Western Reserve at 7 p.m.
