Brooke Donovan's (Westport, Conn./Staples) goal 10 minutes into the first overtime period would send the Denison Big Red field hockey team to a 4-3, come from behind victory over Earlham College on Friday afternoon from Richmond, Ind. The victory snapped a streak of five consecutive overtime losses which dated back to the 2007 season.
The Quakers came out strong, taking a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes of play. Christine Ferguson got them on the board first when she scored via a penalty corner in the the sixth minute. A little over two minutes later, Kate Birdsall scored the Quakers second goal of the game.
In the 21st minute DU would begin their rally by scoring a pair of goals over a two minute span. Senior forward Kristen Schneider (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) scored an unassisted goal to cut the Quaker lead in half and then Schneider would find Catie Merrick (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest) for her team-high seventh goal of the season.
The two teams would end the first half tied at 2-2 and six minutes into the second half, DU struck again when senior Molly McCue (Gibsonia, Pa./Aquinas Academy) scored off a pass from Merrick. That Denison lead would be short lived because 59 seconds later Earlham's Cassie Gage tied the game at 3-3 thanks to a helper by Birdsall.
The score would remain deadlocked at 3-3 until the 81st minute when Donovan locked up the victory off an assist by Schneider. The goal was the third of Donovan's career and it improved Denison's North Coast Athletic Conference record to 3-2.
Earlham managed to outshoot DU 21-19 but the Big Red took 15 penalty corners to the Quakers' 13. Denison goalie Brittany Benson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) had 10 saves.
The Big Red (4-3) will take on DePauw University on Saturday in Louisville, Ky. on the campus of Bellarmine University. On Sunday they will take on Bellarmine before returning to Granville.
