The Denison University field hockey team got back into the win column after a 3-1 victory over North Coast Athletic Conference foe Oberlin College on Saturday afternoon in Oberlin, Ohio. With the win, DU improves to 3-2 on the year and 2-1 in the NCAC.
The Big Red took a 1-0 lead on the only score of the opening half. Senior Emily Marshall (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) scored her first career goal on a penalty stroke in the 29th minute to give Denison the edge.
Senior Molly McCue (Gibsonia, Pa./Aquinas Academy) recorded her first goal of the season at the 48:45 mark. McCue scored off a rebound that came from a shot by first-year Catie Merrick (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest).
The Yeowomen cut the deficit in half when Emily Whitaker found the back of the cage during a pile up in front of the Big Red goal. Rookie Brooke Donovan (Westport, Conn./Staples) gathered her own rebound and scored to add an insurance goal in the 63rd minute of play.
Denison outshot Oberlin 32-15, including an 11-7 edge in shots on goal. DU also held an 18-7 advantage in penalty corners. Big Red goalie Brittany Benson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and OC keeper Emily Bigelow each made six stops.
Denison returns to action Tuesday (Sept. 15) when the travel to Kenyon College. Game time in Gambier, Ohio is slated for 4:30 p.m.
