No. 16 Wabash upends Denison

Box Score

Matt Hudson threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns, and Tommy Mambourg ran four 120 yards and another score as 16th-ranked Wabash topped Denison University 56-7 in their North Coast Athletic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon in Crawfordsville, Ind.

The Little Giants' offense was firing on all cylinders early in the contest, thanks in large part to a solid ground attack.  Junior wide receiver Wes Chamblee found the end zone on a 20-yard end around just 2:02 into the game.  Wabash went on to score four more times, including two more rushing touchdowns by Wes Chamblee, en route to taking a 35-0 lead into the locker room.

Coming off a lackluster offensive performance in the first half, Denison showed signs of life to start the second half.  Senior running back Nick Krempasky (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) took the opening kick off 62 yards back to the Little Giants' 30-yard line.  After an incomplete pass on first down and a four-yard dash by Krempasky on the second play of the drive, the 5'10 senior found a hole up the middle and ripped off a 26-yard run to break up the shutout.  Krempasky finished the day with 44 yards on 11 carries, while catching two passes for 34 yards.  The senior also had six kickoff returns for 172 yards.  Sophomore quarterback Braden Layer (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) finished the day 10-for-20 with 84 yards.

The DU defense was led by sophomore defensive back Scott Baird (Shelby, Ohio/Shelby) who posted nine tackles.  Freshman Alex Sycher (Columbus, Ohio/New Albany) made eight stops, including a game-high five solo tackles and two tackles for loss.  Senior Jaime Mackie (Richfield, Ohio/Revere) added another eight tackles, while junior Nick Weiss (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) also chipped in seven stops.

The Big Red fall to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the NCAC following the loss, while the Little Giants improve to 1-0 on the year and 1-0 in the league.  Denison returns to action on Sept. 26 when they travel to the College of Wooster.  Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
