A campus-wide power outage postponed last night's regularly scheduled North Coast Athletic Conference match-up between Denison and Kenyon. On Thursday, the power was back at full strength in Gambier but for the Big Red, the lights didn't turn on until midway through the second half.
What would ensue is a 23-11 run by DU over the final eight minutes of play resulting in a 63-61 victory for Denison. It is their fourth straight win over Kenyon College and their sixth straight win of the 2009-10 season.
It was a slow-burn comeback for the Red and White, who trailed 50-40 with 8:33 left in the contest. Denison's biggest ally down the stretch was their free throw shooting. In the second half alone, DU connected on 14 of 15 from the charity stripe, but they still needed a defensive stop on the game's final possession to come away with the victory.
With 11.9 seconds left and trailing by two, Kenyon hauled in a defensive rebound off a miss from the left wing by Kristen Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) as the shot clock neared expiration. The Ladies called a time out after crossing mid-court and were set to inbound the basketball from their own baseline.
On that pivotal inbounds play, the Big Red defended it to perfection, forcing Kenyon into a desperation pass that went beyond half court before being controlled by Kenyon's Kat Powers. With time running down, Powers was forced to hoist an off balance shot from the top of the key for the win. The shot failed to draw iron and Denison left Tomisch Arena with their second conference victory of the season.
Junior Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) scored a game-high 23 points and gave Denison their first lead since the opening minutes of the contest with 2:21 left in the second half. Kaiser was 10 of 16 from the field and also added five rebounds. Sophomore Christina Myers (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) followed with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Meyer also reached double-digits, with 10 points and the team's only two 3-point field goals.
Leading the way for Kenyon was Morgan Korinek who finished with 21 points while going 9 for 12 from the field in just 26 minutes. Kenyon shot 41 percent from the field and were 7 of 11 from the free throw line.
Denison won the rebounding battle, 36-33 and shot 42 percent from the field and 83 percent from the line.
The Big Red will take the weekend off, but return to the court on Tuesday (Dec. 15) when they host Bethany College at 6 p.m.
