Laura German scored two goals, spearheading The College of Wooster on a pivotal 4-0 run, leading the top-seeded Fighting Scots to a 4-2 win over fourth-seeded Denison in the semifinals of the 2009 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament from John P. Papp Stadium in Wooster, Ohio.
The Big Red struck first on the scoreboard when senior forward Molly McCue (Gibsonia, Pa./Aquinas Academy) scored off a rebounded shot attempt from Brooke Donovan (Westport, Conn./Staples) in the eighth minute of play. The goal was McCue's eighth of the season and the 28th of her career.
Wooster would answer the Big Red's score just five minutes later when Laura German scored off a pass from Brittany Montgomery. That goal would trigger a four-goal run by the Scots that would stretch into the second half and give Wooster a three-goal lead with just over 16 minutes to play. During that Wooster run the Scots got a pair of goals from German, one goal from Montgomery and one goal from leading scorer Amanda Artman.
Denison stopped that streak with 15:33 to play in the second half when first-year Catie Merrick (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest) chipped a ball into the upper left corner of the cage for her 18th goal of the season. With the score now 4-2 in favor of Wooster, Denison managed just one shot and two penalty corners over the final 15 minutes of play which allowed the Scots to advance to the NCAC Finals on Saturday.
Wooster held a 13-12 advantage in total shots, while DU goalie Brittany Benson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) posted five saves in 70 minutes. Wooster goalie Madalyn Myers finished with six saves for the Scots. The Big Red led 9-7 in corners.
Today's game marked Denison's first NCAC Tournament appearance since 2006. After struggling to a 3-15 season in 2008, the Big Red rebounded with a record of 11-8 in 2009 while finishing fourth in the conference's regular season standings. Wooster improves to 15-5 with the victory and will host No. 3 seed, Ohio Wesleyan, on Saturday. The Bishops advanced to the NCAC Finals by defeating No. 2 seed, Wittenberg 1-0, in overtime.
