Another late goal by Schneider sends Big Red to win

Kristen Schneider's (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) goal in the 68th minute sent Denison to their seventh victory of the season and broke a 1-1 tie against Washington & Jefferson on Saturday from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.  Denison's 2-1 victory marked their fifth one-goal win of 2009.

Denison held a 1-0 lead at halftime despite being outshot 6-5.  Denison's first goal came in the 28th minute when freshman Brooke Donovan (Westport, Conn./Staples) found classmate Catie Merrick (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forrest) in front of the goal for her team-best eighth goal of the season.  While Denison was outshot over the first 35 minutes of play they dominated possession and had four penalty corner attempts in the period.

In the second half it was a different story as Washington & Jefferson took control of the game offensively and kept the pressure on the Big Red throughout the final 35 minutes.  The Presidents tied the match at 1-1 in the 50th minute when Li Turcik found Kim Marcius off a penalty corner attempt.  It seemed at times as if the Presidents spent the entire second half taking penalty corners.  They totaled 13 on the day with 12 of those coming in the second stanza.

After surviving seven corners in a seven minute stretch, Denison got the ball into scoring position with just over two minutes left in regulation.  Merrick took a shot that was saved by W&J goalie Shelby Colyer but Schneider was there to put-back the rebound.

W&J outshot Denison 14-9 and out-cornered them 13-6.  DU goalie Brittany Benson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) posted six saves and senior back Emily Marshall had one defensive save.

The Big Red improve to 7-4 overall while Washington & Jefferson falls to 3-3.  The Big Red will return to North Coast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday when they host Wittenberg at 4:30 p.m.
