The Denison Big Red got on the scoreboard just 18 seconds into Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference match versus Oberlin College and kept the pressure on, resulting in a 5-0 victory for DU from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
Denison took a season-high 39 shots and found the back of the cage twice in the opening half only to return with three goals over the final 35 minutes of action. Coming off a four-goal performance on Wednesday versus The College of Wooster, first-year Catie Merrick (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest) scored twice on Saturday, both coming off assists from Kristen Schneider (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) who was out in front of the defense, in transition.
The match's first goal was scored by first-year Brooke Donovan (Westport, Conn./Staples) when she took the pass from the opening whistle and went one-on-one against Oberlin goalkeeper Emily Bigelow, beating her to the right side.
The rest of the scoring would come in the second half when senior Molly McCue (Gibsonia, Pa./Aquinas Academy) scored on a breakaway goal in the 58th minute. The final goal would be provided by Schneider who scored off a pass from sophomore Caroline Kasper with just under seven minutes to play.
Merrick led Denison in shot attempts with 12 and Schneider followed with nine shots. Oberlin goalie Emily Bigelow posted 19 saves while Denison goalie Brittany Benson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) stopped two of Oberlin's three shot attempts.
Denison improves to 10-7 overall and 6-5 in NCAC play. This is the first 10-win season by a Big Red team since 2003 and their 22nd in school history.
The Big Red will close out their regular season next Saturday (Oct. 31) when they host Earlham College at 12 p.m.
