Denison freshman Catie Merrick (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest) scored a career-high four goals, but the College of Wooster's explosive offense came through late, with three unanswered goals, to edge the Big Red 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Big Red took a commanding 4-2 lead early in the second half off Merrick's fourth goal of the match and her 13 goal of the season. Prior to Merrick's third goal, Denison got on the scoreboard first when she redirected a shot off the stick of rookie Devon Satnick (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon).
The Wooster comeback started with 24 minutes left in the match when Amanda Artman scored for the second time off a feed from Eileen Barrer. Clare Nelson-Johnsen would follow six minutes later with an unassisted goal, tying the match at 4-4. The eventual game winner would be provided by Laura German with 8:38 left to play.
Wooster outshot Denison 23-19 and took 13 penalty corners to Denison's nine. Big Red goalie Brittany Benson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) posted 14 saves while Madalyn Meyers notched seven saves for Wooster.
The loss evens the season series between Denison and Wooster. Denison handed the Scots their first loss of the season on Sept. 26, 2009. Denison's overall record dips to 9-7 and 5-5 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. The Fighting Scots improve to 13-5 overall and 9-2 in conference play.
