Gators take a bite out of the Big Red in Meadville

Box Score

T.J. Salopek threw for 364 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for one more as Allegheny College topped Denison University, 35-13 in a night game from Meadville, Pa.

Salopek completed a tidy 15 of 19 pass attempts for a career-high 364 yards.  He got off his team off to a great start under some pretty tough circumstances.  After Denison's opening drive was stalled at the Gator 49-yard line.  Denison punter Jake Safer pinned Allegheny on their own six-yard line.  On their first offensive play from scrimmage, Salopek found Terry Hartford for a 94-yard touchdown pass, marking the second-longest scoring play in Allegheny football history.

Early in the second quarter Salopek would call his own number, scampering 12 yards for the score and capping off an eight play, 66 yard drive.

The Big Red would rebound on their next possession with a nine play, 74 yard drive that would be finished off by a Nick Stephens (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey) to James Hall (Kenilworth, Ill./New Trier) touchdown pass from 32-yards out.  DU would go into halftime trailing 14-7 but Salopek and the Gators continued to heat up as the temperatures dipped in the second half.

Allegheny opened the third quarter with the football and Salopek hit consecutive passes covering 31 yards and 24 yards to get his team deep into Denison territory.  A roughing the passer penalty would move the ball from the 22 yard line to the 11 yard line and tailback Brian Tamburlin would finish things off with his second touchdown of the season.

Denison's ensuing offensive possession would be stalled after eight plays but once again, Shafer did his job by pinning the Gators on their own 4-yard line with a nice 47 yard punt.  After a sack on first down by senior defensive end Mike Barnum (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) and an incompletion on second down, Salopek pulled another rabbit out of his hat with a 79 yard strike to Mark Sutton.

After another Big Red sack, Salopek found Sutton for a 24-yard touchdown pass giving Allegheny a commanding 28-7 lead.  Denison would get on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when Stephens found Lucas Graham (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) for a 13-yard touchdown with 5:18 remaining.

Overall, Allegheny finished with 448 yards of total offense while Denison was held to 227 yards.  DU did not commit a turnover and they won the time of possession 34-26.  Gator wide receiver finished with a career-high 185 yards receiving while Sutton finished with three catches for 120 yards.

Stephens ended the night 13 for 23 for 150 yards and two touchdown passes.  Shawn Eagle (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) caught for passes for 46 yards and Nick Krempasky (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) carried the ball 21 times for 68 yards.  On defense, sophomore linebacker Adam Frudden (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) led the way with five tackles and one sack.

Denison drops to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with the loss.  Allegheny improves to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.  The Big Red will hit the road again next Saturday (Oct. 24) when they play at the University of Chicago at 1 p.m.
