Denison rallies for 2-1 win over Centre

Brittany Benson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) posted 10 saves and fellow first-year Katie Couyoumjian (Ann Arbor, Mich./Greenhills) scored the game-winning goal in the 58th minute to lead Denison to a 2-1 lead over Centre College on Friday afternoon.

Centre, who entered the match with a 9-1 record and a five-match winning streak, took an early lead when Mary Kate Clodius scored when she cleaned up a saved shot from teammate Sarah Jessee.

Early in the second half DU tied the game at 1-1 when Molly McCue (Gibsonia, Pa./Aquinas Academy) did the same as Clodius, following up a rebound with her sixth goal of the season.

The match would remain tied for the next 20 minutes until Couyoumjian's go-ahead goal at the 57:09 mark.  Despite the low score the two teams were very active offensively, combining for 33 shots and a total of 20 saves.

Both goalkeepers played well as Benson led DU with 10 saves while facing 10 penalty corners.  Also helping the defensive cause for Denison was seniors Emily Marshall (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manuel) and Katie Partridge (Mechanicsville, Pa./Maggie Walker Governors School).  Both posted critical defensive saves in the second half.  For Marshall, it marked her fifth defensive save of the season.

Centre held a 18-15 edge in shots and a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners.  Colonels goalie Patty Cowley posted eight saves in her 70 minutes of action.

Denison improves to 9-6 overall with the win while Centre falls to 9-2.  The Big Red will take the rest of the weekend off and return to action on Wednesday (Oct. 21) when they travel to The College of Wooster for a key North Coast Athletic Conference match.
