The 20th-ranked Denison women's soccer team extended their current winning streak to seven games following a 2-0 victory over Earlham College in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday from Richmond, Ind. The win improved the Big Red's record to 11-2-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
After 60 scoreless minutes of action, juniors Kimmi Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) and Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./The Baylor School) each tallied goals in just a 2:16 span to jump out to the two goal advantage. Oshita's game-winning tally was generated off a free kick by senior captain Anna Rusch (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends School). Rusch's 20-yard free kick drilled Earlham goalie Megan Holthaus in the chest for the save, but Oshita was there to clean up the rebound and bury the ball into the back of the net. Clemmer weaved her way through the Quaker defense to tack on an unassisted insurance goal.
The Quakers had chances to cut into the Big Red lead, but stout defense and solid play by senior goalkeeper Courtney Cobb (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) kept Earlham from hanging one on the scoreboard.
As has been the story for the majority of the season, DU held a distinct 24-5 advantage in shots. The Big Red also attempted five corner kicks compared to two by the Quakers. Cobb finished the day with five saves as she recorded her 10th shutout of the season. Cobb and the Big Red defense have only given up one goal during their eight-game unbeaten streak.
Denison returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 17) when they welcome Thomas More College to Barclay-Thomsen Field at 3:30 p.m.
