After both Kenyon and Denison played the first 35 minutes to a scoreless tie, both teams' offense woke up in the second half with four goals coming in the span of 10 minutes. The result was a critical 3-1 win for Denison from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
Denison got on the scoreboard first in the 50th minute when first-year Katie Couyoumjian (Ann Arbor, Mich./Greenhills) redirected a shot by classmate Brooke Donovan (Westport, Conn./Staples) through the legs of the Kenyon goalie. For Donovan it marked her fifth assist of the season and the goal was Couyoumjian's second of her short career.
Just under three minutes later Kenyon struck back when Holly Bacon knifed a shot through the Denison defense and into the back of the cage from roughly 10 yards away.
Penalty corners have been a huge advantage for the Big Red all season and Tuesday was no different. Two minutes later Denison's Emily Marshall (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manuel) was taking the team's 12 of what would be 14 corners on the day and she sent the ball into play where Donovan was there once again to send a shot into the box where senior Molly McCue (Gibsonia, Pa./Aquinas Academy) got her stick in the right place, angling the ball past the Kenyon keeper for the eventual game-winner.
Denison's final goal would be scored by McCue off an assist by Devon Satnick (Norwalk, Conn./Brein McMahon) in the 60th minute.
DU outshot Kenyon 15-9 and Brittany Benson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) posted four saves for DU. Possibly the biggest save of the game came in the 42nd minute when Marshall turned in a beautiful defensive save off a shot by Kenyon's Cary Watts. Marshall leads the team with four defensive saves this season.
Denison improves to 8-6 overall and 5-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Kenyon falls to 5-10 and 4-4 in conference play. The eight wins for the Big Red are their most in a season since 2005 and they still have four games left in the regular season. DU will return to action on Friday (Oct. 16) at 4 p.m. when they host Centre College.
