Lilly Jianas' goal with 4:10 left in the second half was enough to send Ohio Wesleyan to a 3-2 victory over the Denison Big Red field hockey team on Saturday afternoon from Selby Field in Delaware, Ohio.
Jianas' game winner came via a penalty corner that was served up by OWU's Macie Miller. Jianas handed the pass and sent the ball past the DU goalkeeper for the go-ahead score. With just under one minute left, Denison did get one last scoring opportunity when Brooke Donovan's (Westport, Conn./Staples) shot attempt was blocked. The Big Red were awarded a penalty corner that was taken by Kristen Schneider (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington). Her pass inside to Catie Merrick (Owings Mills, Md./Garrison Forest) was on the mark but Merrick's shot attempt in front of the goal went just wide to the left.
The Battling Bishops took a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute when Christa Cocumelli scored off an assist by Jianas. DU would rally with a pair of goals in the span of just 1:35 starting by a score from Donovan off a penalty corner. In the 16th minute Schneider's shot attempt was saved by Bishop net minder Krista Murray but first-year Catie Merrick was there to play the rebound, knocking the ball into the cage and giving Denison a 2-1 lead.
OWU would tie the score at 2-2 in the 19th minute when Mimi Anthony centered a pass for Lex Kondas who finished the job for her first goal of the season. The two teams would play to a stalemate over the next 47 minutes until Jianas provided the eventual game-winner for the Bishops.
Denison attempted 15 shots on the day and took 13 penalty corners. The Bishops managed just even shots and had five penalty corners but Murray turned in a fine six save performance in the cage for OWU.
DU falls to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Ohio Wesleyan improves to 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the NCAC. Denison will return to action on Tuesday with a key conference match-up against Kenyon College at 4:30 p.m. in Granville, Ohio.
