Moffitt Earns Pitcher of the Year Honors, Five Big Red Named to All-NCAC Teams

Cleveland, Ohio - The North Coast Athletic Conference recently released their All-NCAC softball teams, and five Big Red were selected. Junior Madilyn Moffitt was named Pitcher of the Year, and Leilah Ferrari and Carley Melton were the other band of Big Red to be named to the first team. Indy Workman and Brooke Surbaugh were named second team All-NCAC to round out the list.

First Team


Madilyn Moffitt (Junior | Pitcher | New Castle, Indiana | Pitcher of the Year) - Junior Madilyn Moffitt earns first team All-NCAC honors and is awarded Pitcher of the Year for her outstanding season in the circle. She becomes the eighth overall Big Red pitcher to collect the award, and second-consecutive after Sydney Silverstein won it last year. The three-time NCAC Pitcher of the Week started 21 games, posting  a record of 10-9, throwing 123 innings and 13 complete games. She was second in the conference in strikeouts with 92, and was third in the league in earned run average with 2.39. Moffitt also posted four shutouts, and only gave up an opponent batting average of .252. It is her second time landing on an All-NCAC team, as last year she was third team. 

Leilah Ferrari (Junior | Infield | Liberty Township, Ohio) - Ferrari jumps to first team honors after obtaining third team status last season. The junior from Liberty Township, Ohio was one of the premier hitters and fielders on the Big Red, posting a batting average of .345 with 39 hits. She led the conference in doubles with 16, and tallied 22 RBI's and 60 total bases. Ferrari recorded 10 multi-hit games, and had a grand slam in a five-RBI contest against Ohio Wesleyan. In the field, she had a fielding percentage of .908, throwing 74 assists and 65 putouts.

Carley Melton (Sophomore | Infield | Cypress, Texas) - Melton earns her first career first team all-conference nod after a stellar season in the box. The sophomore led the Big Red in batting average (.368), hits (43), runs (23), and stolen bases (10). She has had 13 multi-hit games, and is currently on a five-game hit streak. In the field, she posted a .905 fielding percentage, and had 29 putouts and 57 assists.

Second Team

Indy Workman (Senior | Infield | Greene County, Indiana) - Senior Indy Workman earns her first All-NCAC distinction, landing second team honors. She posted a .330 batting average, totaling 30 hits and 17 RBI's on the season so far. She led the team and conference in walks with 34, 13 more than second, and broke the Denison record for walks in a career with her at-bat against DePauw earlier this year. In the field, she posted a .956 fielding percentage, totaling 54 putouts and 75 assists.

Brooke Surbaugh (Senior | Utility/Pitcher | San Bruno, California) - Senior Brooke Surbaugh notches her fourth career all-conference team award, securing second team honors as a utility player. The San Bruno, California native led the Big Red in home runs with five, and was second on the team in batting average with .351. She tallied a team-high 31 RBI's, and accounted for 40 hits with a slugging percentage of .544. In the circle, she would go 9-10 in 19 starts, pitching 114.2 innings and striking out 70.

The Big Red will travel out to East Texas Baptist University in the Marshall Regional for the first game of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, May 15 at 12 pm.
