Softball Closes Out Season in NCAA Tournament

Marshall, Texas - Brianna Gonzalez belted a grand slam for the Big Red, but it was not enough as they fell to St. Thomas (Tx.) in the losers bracket of the NCAA Tournament 13-6. Denison bowed out of the tournament after their second loss, but fought valiantly to spark a late comeback and put runs on the board. The Big Red finished the season 20-21, and won the NCAC Tournament Championship.

The Lions struck first early, putting up five runs in the bottom of the second to go up and keep a steady lead throughout the second frame. St. Thomas continued to pile on the runs, scoring four in the third inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead heading into the fourth inning.

Denison was finally able to get on the board, as Leilah Ferrari reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Brooke Surbaugh for the Big Red's first run of the game. After a Riley Smith walk, Brianna Gonzalez walked into the box with bases loaded and down 0-2 in the count. On the next pitch, she delivered, crushing a grand slam to make the game 9-5 and an explosive inning for Denison on just one hit.

The Big Red kept up their offensive presence, as Indy Workman was able to score from Carley Melton on a steal attempt, bringing the game within three in favor of the Lions. St. Thomas was able to find their footing once again on the offensive end, scoring four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 13-6 and what would ultimately be the final score.
