Foxfire, N.C. - Denison men's golf placed third out of 14 teams in the Hampden-Sydney Invitational held at Foxfire Golf Club. The Big Red's performance marks a welcomed turnaround from last week's Port City Classic showing, as Denison's average team score improved by 16 strokes.
Round 1 - Shooting +11 as a team on Monday, the Big Red were led by first-year Will McCarthy, carding a 71 (-1). It was McCarthy's collegiate golf debut. The first-year's seven birdies is the most in a single round for the Big Red so far this year. Fellow first-year Jack Pelletier, who shined as Denison's top finisher last week, found himself only three strokes behind McCarthy on Monday, shooting a 74 (+2).Â
Round 2 - On day two, Denison matched their day one total, once again shooting +11. Pelletier's 70 (-2) was the best round for the Big Red on the tournament, and it propelled him into the top ten of the individual leaderboard as he signed his card. The eagle landed twice for the Big Red on Tuesday, as Pelletier eagled the par-5 4th and McCarthy the par-5 14th.Â
