Box Score 2 Greensboro, N.C.: The Denison baseball team, ranked No. 5 by D3baseball.com and No. 4 by ABCA, capped off an explosive opening weekend with a 14-11 victory over the Suny Cortland Dragons(15th D3/19th ABCA) and a 4-2 decision over the University of Lynchburg Hornets(9th D3/7th ABCA).
Denison finished the weekend a perfect 3-0 and will travel to Roanoke College next weekend for a three-game series in Salem, Virginia.
Sunday, Feb. 23 (Denison 14, Cortland 11)
A high-powered offensive showdown left the Big Red in an epic showdown with the Dragons at the D3 College Showcase in Greensboro, North Carolina. Denison struck first after
Erik Sundgren hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Cortland offense caught fire and scored 10 runs over the next four innings. The Big Red were able to hang in the game with a handful of base hits by Sundgren,
Eric Colaco,
Cade Nowik, and
Jake Blozy.
Heading into the bottom frame of the 5th inning, the Big Red spotted seven unanswered runs following RBIs from
Max Fishbein,
Alex Vasquez,
Andrew Fazio,
Jack Steel, Sundgren, and Colaco. Fazio was able to knock in one final run in the bottom of the 6th.
The Big Red used five arms out of the bullpen. Pete Lemke got the start for the Big Red with
Michael Gray,
Eron Vega(1-0),
Ryan Starr, and
Jack Rollo(S,1) making appearances. The game totaled 25 runs, 25 hits, and 23 walks. The offense was led by Sundgren with three RBIs, one walk, and a stolen base. Vega picked up his first career win in the red and white after hurling 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit, three strikeouts, and no runs.
Monday, Feb. 24 (Denison 4, Lynchburg 2)
A top-ten battle between the Hornets from Lynchburg and the Big Red from Denison resulted in a low-scoring, defensive masterclass from both squads. After a scoreless first inning,
Andrew Fazio put the Big Red on the board with an RBI single to centerfield. The offense followed suit in the bottom of the 3rd after
Erik Sundgren hit his second solo home run of the weekend.
The game remained 2-0 until the top of the 6th inning until Lynchburg capitalized on two bases-loaded ground outs, tying the game up at two all.
Denison was able to pull away after
Cade Nowik scored Sundgren with a sac fly to center field. Immediately after,
Cooper Marrs scored
Eric Colaco on a line drive base hit into left field.
With a two-run lead heading into the top of the 9th inning, the Big Red defense left its final mark on the game after recording three straight outs to come away with a victory.
Pre-season All-American pitcher
Will Rettig got the start for the Big Red. He threw five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and recording three strikeouts.
Sam Larson and
Manny Nager came out of the bullpen in relief, with Nager slamming the door shut in the top of the 9th inning to record the save.
Eric Colaco led the offense by going two for four at the dish and scoring the final run.
