Men’s tennis claims second straight NCAC Regular-Season Championship

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 21, 2024) – The No. 5 nationally-ranked Denison University men's tennis team captured the 2024 North Coast Athletic Conference Regular-Season Championship with a perfect 7-0 record in NCAC matches following its 9-0 home win over No. 47-ranked DePauw University on Sunday. The Big Red also added a 9-0 victory over Otterbein to close out the regular season.

It is the second straight regular-season conference title for Denison (16-4 overall) and is its fourth straight NCAC Championship season overall after also winning the NCAC Tournament Championship during each of the last three seasons.

Match #1 – No. 5 Denison 9, No. 47 DePauw 0:
Doubles Singles
  • Kael Shah pulled out a win in a third-set super tiebreaker, 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (10-0), at No. 1 singles.
  • Jacob Patterson won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.
  • Only one of the remaining four singles matches saw DePauw win more than three games.
 
Match #2 – No. 5 Denison 9, Otterbein 0:
Doubles
  • The closest match was an 8-3 win by Gramley and Ethan Green at No. 1 doubles.
Singles
  • Otterbein won more than three games in only two of the six singles matches as Ryan Patrick won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Anthony Payiavlas won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
 
Record Book Watch:
Single-Season Singles Wins:
  • Shah (26-4) is now alone in third place for singles wins in one season while Mackler (24-3) is tied for fifth. The record is 31 set by Andreas Chapides in 2023.
Singles-Season Doubles Wins:
  • With two more doubles wins on Sunday, Mackler (28-2) ties Tim Ciancola's program record of 28 doubles wins in one season set in 2022.
Single-Season Combined Wins:
  • Mackler (52-5) is still second in combined wins in one season while Shah (47-14) is third, Green (43-19) is seventh and Patterson (42-6) is tied for eighth. The record is 55 set by Cianciola in 2022.
 
Next Up: Denison will host the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament starting on Friday, April 26, and running through Sunday, April 28, in Granville, Ohio.
