PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (March 8, 2024) – Day one of the College Squash Association National Collegiate Individual & Doubles Championships saw Denison University's
Juan Felipe Hernandez and
Antoinette Ramsey compete in the individual championships while
Lucas Piller and
Rayan Dar competed together in the men's doubles tournament.
In men's singles, Hernandez competed in the Molly Cup: B Division South, and he matched up against Nick Agger (Williams) in the first round. Hernandez scored 11 points in all five of his sets and led 8-5 in the fourth set with a chance to take the 3-1 win, but could not close it out. Then in the fifth set, Hernandez led 8-4 before Agger came back to tie it at 9-9. From there, Agger led 10-9 and Hernandez led 11-10 before the final three points went to Agger with a 13-11, 7-11, 9-11, 13-11, 13-11 win. As a freshman last season, Hernandez advanced to the consolation bracket championship (Molly Cup: B Division East), and now he will look to do the same this time around.
In women's singles, Ramsey competed in the Holleran Cup: B Division East and battled India Stephenson (Princeton) in the first round, falling 3-0 (11-1, 11-4, 11-9). In the consolation bracket, Ramsey took on Laila Selim (William Smith) and again fell 3-0 (11-1,11-1, 11-6). This was the second appearance at the individual championships for Ramsey, who two years ago competed in the Holleran Cup: B Division North bracket.
In their second straight appearance in the men's doubles tournament, Dar and Piller dropped a 3-1 (11-5, 8-11, 11-5, 11-2) decision in the first round to Vedant Gupta and Andrew Willwerth (Brown).
On day two of the CSA National Collegiate Individual & Doubles Championships on Saturday, Hernandez will play in the semifinals of the Molly Cup: B Division South consolation bracket starting at 11:40 a.m. against Maxwell Velazquez (Virginia). In addition,
Kate Manderlink and
Tarun Mammen will battle Ellyn Xu and Harry Charlton (Tufts) in the round of 16 of the mixed doubles tournament starting at 12:45 p.m. while
Virginia Lawrence and
Esme Adelman take on Abby Holding and Kieran Suntha (Middlebury) in the first round of the women's doubles tournament at 3:45 p.m.
