Big Red men place sixth at D-III nationals

GREENSBORO, N.C. (March 23, 2024) – The Denison University men's swimming & diving team placed sixth overall at the NCAA Division III Championship. At the end of the meet, Denison finished with exactly 200 points, leading Calvin University (188 points) in seventh by 12 points. In front of the Big Red was Williams College (269.5) in fifth, New York University (282) in fourth, the University of Chicago (309) in third, Kenyon College (391) in second and Emory University capturing its third consecutive and fourth overall national crown with 434 points.

In the 1,650 freestyle, Lucas Conrads (15:22.12) and Luke Landis (15:23.17) finished back-to-back in third and fourth place while Tyler Distenfeld (15:35.23) was ninth and Sam Myaard (15:42.44) was 12th. After beginning the day in eighth place, that bumped Denison up to sixth place in the team standings with 175 points while New York was fifth at 225 points.

Landis is now a four-time All-American in the 1,650 after finishing in seventh place during each of the last two seasons while Conrads and Myaard are now three-time All-Americans in the event.

After not having anybody swim in the 100 freestyle, Devin Testin finished 24th in the 200 backstroke at 1:49.86. In the 200 breaststroke, however, Patrick Daly (1:57.97) qualified for the A Final in fourth place in the prelims while Gavin Jones (1:58.81; 9th), Liam Nelson (1:59.32; 13th) and Elijah Venos (1:59.37; 14th) all qualified for the B Final.

In the finals, Daly finished sixth in the A Final with a time of 1:59.27 while Jones (1:59.19) was 11th, Venos (1:59.29) was 12th and Nelson (2:00.32) was 16th. Both Daly and Venos earned their second straight All-American certificates in the 200 breaststroke. Denison remained in sixth place in the team standings with 200 points while Williams was fifth with 247.5 points and New York was fourth with 250 points.

Lastly, in the 400 freestyle relay, Denison's group of Daly, Venos, Testin and Jones finished 20th with a time of 3:02.54 in the prelims and did not qualify for the finals.

Over the course of the four-day championship meet, the Big Red finished with 26 All-American performances (23 ind., 3 relay) and seven individual top-eight finishes. 12 competitors for the Big Red earned at least one individual All-American certificate, led by Lucas Conrads (2 First-Team), Patrick Daly (2 First-Team) and Gavin Jones each with three.
