London's Calling

Hill will be returning home to compete in the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships.

London, England- Being a fourteen-time NCAA Division III All-American, three-time NCAA Division III Champion, and three-time NCAA Division III record holder, you might think there is little left for Jack Hill to accomplish. Originally from Leighton Buzzard, U.K., Hill will be returning home to compete in the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships, a premier meet for swimmers seeking to qualify for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the European and World Aquatics Championships, and, since 1946, the Olympics. Run by Aquatics GB, the national governing body for swimming, diving, and other aquatic sports in Great Britain, this event will be held at the London Aquatics Centre, in London's downtown Olympic Park, from April 14 to April 19th.

Hill will be competing in the Men's 100-meter freestyle and Men's 50-meter backstroke. For the freestyle, he is seeded 42nd of 106 with a seed time of 51.70. Prelims will be held on Thursday, April 16, at 9:30 a.m. (that's 4:30 a.m. here in Ohio). Whether he swims for finals will depend on his placement. The B final, 9th through 16th place, will swim at 6 p.m. (1 p.m.), and the A final, 1st through 8th place, will swim at 7:45 p.m. (2:45 p.m.). For the backstroke, he is seeded 44th of 82 with a seed time of 26.91. Prelims and finals for the backstroke will be held at the same times but just one day later on Friday, April 17.

One thing to keep in mind is the difference between long-course and short-course pools. Hill will be swimming in a 50-meter long-course pool, used worldwide and for the Olympics, rather than the 25-yard short-course pool used for high school and NCAA swimming in the U.S. (The conversion is 50 meters = 54 yards if you're curious). Short course swims are typically faster than long course because not only is the overall distance shorter, but you also have more walls to push off of, which increases the amount of time you spend in your fastest portion of the race, streamline pushing of the wall. Best of luck to Jack, and to those of us waking up early enough to watch him swim live.
